Effects of Parenting on Kids
Hey there let's learn about what parenting actually is and how it helps in mental growth of your child.
Parenting:
Parenting basically refers to the attitude of parents towards their children which includes all aspects of their behaviors ranging from how they treat and communicate with their children to inculcation of different moral values in them.
Children learn from their parents. Parents are like role models for them. In this regard parenting holds an immense importance in the healthy upbringing of a child as it acts as a blue print in mental growth of a child. That is why it is said that a child is a reflection of his/her parents because a child does exactly what his/her parents teach him/her to do.
Now let's see what parenting styles parents can opt for the upbringing of their children and effects of these parenting styles on children:
Parenting Styles:
Different researchers have categorized these parental styles into different number of groups based on their psychological construct statpearl article.
Mainly there are 4 styles: "authoritarian parenting", "authoritative parenting", "permissive parenting" and lastly "uninvolved parenting".
- Authoritarian Parenting:
This type of parenting is rigid with no room for flexibility. What is said needs to be done otherwise the child will face consequences for their misbehavior. It is like master and slave relationship.
Effects: Well it results in aggression and rebellious attitude in some kids towards others. As they grow up anger builds up in them because of the suppression of their free will which results in anger issues in such type of kids.
Well as we know that, not all kids are same, some become overly shy and unconfident because they do what they are told to do. They don't develop their own understanding or experience so, such type of kids follow exactly what their parents say.
- Authoritative Parenting:
Effects: Such kids are independent, self-motivated and confident. They have strong moral values and guidelines which enable them to overcome every possible difficulty in life. They develop good social behavior and are stable.
- Permissive Parenting:
In permissive parenting parents set their children loose and let them figure out their lives themselves. Parents are more like friends than parents and they have good communication with their children.
Effects: As kids are left to figure out their lives themselves they can develop some harmful habits. As they are set free they can either fall for bad habits like over use of mobiles, excessive game play or develop eating habits leading to obesity. As they don't have any clear guidelines they do what they feel like to do now it can be either right or wrong depending on the perception and approach of the kid.
- Uninvolved Parenting:
In this type of parenting children are given a lot of freedom. Parents fulfil their basic needs but in terms of communication there is no interaction. Parents live detached from their child's life.
Effects: Children face lots of challenges in their life which can be related to academics and maintenance of different relationships.
Conclusion:
In my opinion parenting style should neither be too much strict and rigid leaving no room for a child to grow in their own personal space nor should be too much relaxing leaving the child totally free on their own.
Both these extremes are dangerous and do not result in healthy development. Therefore, there should be a balance between both these extremes. in my opinion authoritative parenting style is the best for child's development. A child is able to easily follow guidelines and can act upon according to these guidelines set up by his/her parents and has their support.
